 First Round  Second Round
The door is open: The Ruhr-University (RUB) submits full proposals in the second round of the Excellence Initiative in the funding lines "clusters of excellence" (PROTEIN Networks: From molecular Mechanism to cellular NETWORKS) and "institutional strategies to promote top-level research". On 19 October 2007 the decision will be announced concerning the question which projects will be funded from November 2007.
In the first funding line "graduate schools" the RUB had already been successful in the first round of the Excellence Initiative: the campus-wide Research School has started its work and is funded with approx. 1.5m € annually; it offers young researchers PhD-studies with added value. The specialty of the RUB concept: researchers of nearly all faculties are co-operating closely and supervise PhD-students irrespective of subject boundaries.

Structures and Strategies

For about the last four years the RUB has been engaged in an intensive process of renewal. On the basis of its strategic advantages (a campus university, a wide spectrum of disciplines, front runner in the Bologna process) it has been pushing through institutional reform. The aim is, as stated in the Higher Education Concept 2010, to be in the top 10 DFG ranking for all areas of research.

Important milestones are listed in the targets that have been agreed between the RUB and North Rhine Westfalian (NRW) government. These include the establishment of Centres of Excellence, the building up of a research focus on "Global Change", to the creation of a University wide Graduate School. The Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) acknowledged the RUB's multifaceted reform by designating it a "Best Practices" university in 2004.
