Reform and Progress

RUB reform often becomes a model for others. This is exactly the situation with the RUB implementation of the internationally recognized Bachelor and Master system that is part of the Bologna process. By being oriented to the needs of the labour market, the new system offers students a new perspective: shorter study times and more praxis relevance - also for teacher training. Interdisciplinary and open is the RUB way: the “options module” (Optionalbereich) in the Bachelor/Master programmes provides students the opportunity to acquire qualifications (soft skills) which are often a decisive part of a successful career.

The RUB offers courses across the complete spectrum of the natural and medical sciences, engineering, and the social sciences and humanities. Our modern degree programmes offer many opportunities for all kinds of combinations. We have 49 Bachelor and 56 Master programmes, 20 Master of Education programmes, and 13 programmes that lead to a Diplom (the degree prior to the introduction of the Bachelor/Master system) or state exam. Some of these programmes are unique in Germany, e.g. our model for medical training, the international Master in Gender Studies, Humanitarian Assistance, Development Management, or the Diplom in “IT Security”.

The Short Way – Virtual and by Foot

As a campus university, the RUB is a place of short distances – whether you want to go to a lecture, do some research in 50 or so libraries, or attend a cultural event at the Centre of Art and Music.

The distances are even shorter in the internet. Whether at home or on campus the computer centre offers ample opportunity to log on to the local intranet, which the RUB uses for networking and e-learning. Via “Blackboard” there are on-line courses to supplement lectures and seminars and the RUB is in the midst of creating a campus wide system for the administration of courses and exams. We also offer a comprehensive advice portal and BORAKEL, the Bochum Online-Test for study and career. All this eases your start in university life.

Advice and Service is written in capitals at the RUB. It does not matter if you are just interested in what to study or have just completed your degree: we offer support for freshmen, through a mentoring programme for examination candidates, to a career service for those who have graduated.
